April 2022 Newsletter

National Volunteer Week: April 24-30

During National Volunteer Week, we celebrate our volunteers and their contributions to this ministry. Thanks to all those who contribute their gifts and abilities, our programs can continue to expand their reach - allowing more survivors impacted by exploitation to seek true refuge and restoration.

The work of our volunteers also helps to reduce costs, which enables us to provide better services to our participants. Based on an industry-standard rate of $20 equivalent per volunteer hour served, in 2021 volunteers helped NSM save close to $150,000 in operating expenses.
Volunteer Spotlight: Sparrow House Live-In
Tolu first heard about NSM as a social work student and has been a live-in since the end of January! She has found immense joy in being a part of the daily lives of participants. Hearing laughter drift downstairs to her suite has become a favourite of hers. Tolu finds passion in her curiosity about God's love, and why and how he chooses to love us.
"Living together gets rid of the ‘me’ and ‘them’, which should not be there in the first place," says Tolu.
A Story of Impact From Tolu
One day I came back from work, and just one of the ladies was home at the time. I was heading downstairs to my suite and called out to say “hello”. I felt the urge to retrace my steps and go to her room to respond to her after she said “hello”. I poked my head around the doorway, and she asked if I could pray for her. I immediately dropped my stuff and knelt in front of her, and she told me some things that were going on with her. It was such a privilege to have been invited into her space and into her life in that way. We prayed together and then she asked if I’d like to watch a movie with her the next day, which I did, and that was really lovely!

Staff Spotlight: Volunteer Coordinator
Erin became the volunteer coordinator during the fall of 2021, although she has filled various positions since her internship began September 2020. Erin is excited that NSM will be continuing to expand the reach of its programs - something only possible because of the volunteers she serves alongside.
What every volunteer is doing is helping women impacted by sexual exploitation. When asked about what stands out to her about the volunteer team Erin said "They are the most compassionate people and committed volunteers ever!" We want to honour the commitment and loyalty our volunteers who each and every minute they are with us.
"I am extremely grateful to our volunteers who lead and serve with so much grace, humility and compassion. Week after week, they donate their precious time to support our participants: every volunteered minute adds up to women experiencing freedom and regaining their God-given identities. NSM volunteers are truly the hands and feet of Jesus, as they continue His ministry."

Next Step Ministries honours and acknowledges the traditional territories of the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta, which includes the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprising the Siksika, Piikani, and Kainai First Nations), as well as the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Wesley First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to Métis Nation of Alberta, Region III. Next Step Ministries is situated on land adjacent to where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, and that the traditional Blackfoot name of this place is Moh’kins’tsis, which we now call the City of Calgary.
